Welcome to the 30th Annual World Championship Quartz Crystal Dig in Mount Ida, Arkansas, the Quartz Crystal Capital of the World!
This year’s two-day dig event is scheduled for Friday, October 13th & Saturday, October 14th. All amateur quartz crystal diggers are invited to enter!
Note: This is an AMATEUR quartz crystal digging competition. Professional and commercial quartz crystal diggers and dealers are not permitted to compete in the World Championship Quartz Crystal Dig. The Mount Ida Area Chamber of Commerce asks for your understanding and honesty in maintaining this as an amateur event. Any entrant in violation of this rule will be disqualified; their entrance fee forfeited and barred from future events.
The entry fee for the World Championship Quartz Crystal Dig is $100.
Diggers are encouraged to register early! Early Bird Discount, 25% Off when registered by August 31st.
Please Note: Only 200 diggers may register for this year’s event! As of 9/4/17 we have 99 registered diggers. Your payment and your original completed and signed application form are required to register.
No refunds after October 1, 2017.
Same Day Registration Fee, if slots are still available, is $110.
ADULT: Open to diggers 18 years of age and older. Awards presented in two categories, points and clusters.
YOUNG MINERS: Open to diggers 17 and under. Awards presented in one category, points and clusters combined. Parent or legal guardian must accompany minors while digging. Minors must dig their own crystals.
CLUB: Diggers may also team up with fellow rock, gem, and mineral club members to compete for bragging rights and a chance to win a free entry to next year’s dig! Last year’s winner was Heart of Wisconsin Gem & Mineral Society. If you are a member of an American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (AFMS) club, please indicate such on your application form.

Friday, October 13th, 7:00 am, meet at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, 248 Fairgrounds Rd, Mount Ida, AR 71957, for orientation, mine passes, and number assignment. Coffee, donuts, and fresh fruit provided. All diggers must check in at the fairgrounds before proceeding to the mines!
Digging begins at 8:00 am and ends at 3:00 pm. Diggers must check in at the mine, present their mine pass, and sign a liability waiver each day. Diggers may may choose a different mine each day but not switch mines midday. Diggers may not leave the mine and return again later that same day. Once you leave the mine you are done digging for the day! Plan ahead and be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks! Do not leave behind trash at the mines! If you see trash, please pick it up!
Diggers may enter the best point and best cluster they dug on each day for judging by a panel of experienced quartz crystal industry professionals. Diggers must submit their entries, in the numbered bags provided, to the Dig Master at the mine. Crystals submitted for judging must be entered on the same day they were dug.
Judging takes place at the fairgrounds as soon as the crystals are conveyed by the Dig Masters to the Crystal Handlers. Diggers may observe judging. Individual scores are posted upon tabulation of the judges scores by the Scoring Committee. Awards are based on cumulative points. Be sure to enter one point and one cluster each day!
Saturday, October 14th, 7:30 am, meet at the fairgrounds for mine passes, dig announcements, and door prize drawings before proceeding to the mines. Digging begins at 8:00 am and ends at 3:00 pm. Individual scores are posted upon tabulation of the judges scores. Awards banquet begins at 6:00 pm, awards presentation at 7:00 pm. Crystal submissions may be recovered from the stage afterward, around 8:00 pm.
AWARDS & PRIZES
A total of $2,250 in prize money is awarded in three categories: Points, Clusters, and Young Miners. 1st – 3rd place winners in each category receive a quartz crystal adorned award plaque. 1st – 5th place winners in each category are awarded cash prizes as follows: 1st $250, 2nd $200, 3rd $150, 4th $100, 5th $50.
Club Division Awards: 1 Free Entry to next year’s event will be awarded to the club with the highest score. Last year’s winner was Heart of Wisconsin Gem & Mineral Society. In addition, this year 1 Free Entry to next year’s event will be awarded to the club with the largest club representation; the club with the most club members participating in the competition.
Awards and prizes are presented during the Awards Banquet on Saturday evening. Each digger receives one complimentary meal ticket to the awards banquet. Additional meal tickets may be purchased for $10/each. If you prefer a vegetarian meal please indicate such on your entry form!
A few primitive camping spaces (no power, no water, no showers) are available at the Montgomery County Fair Grounds as provided by the Montgomery County Fair Board. Spaces are assigned on a first come, first serve basis with pre-payment required for reservation. If you wish to camp at the fairgrounds, please call ahead: 870-867-2723.

Participation in the World Championship Quartz Crystal Dig (the dig) is physically strenuous. Applicants must be in good health and without a history of health problems that may be aggravated by participation in the dig. Participants waive and release all contestants, sponsors, officials, and volunteers from any and all claims incurred in connection with, or aggravated by participation in the dig.
